As you may or may not know, I will be spending some time in Costa Rica next summer to work as a volunteer with an organization called Youth Challenge International. Naturally, I need money for this to happen. I'd like to share with you guys a bit of info and my motives for embarking on this project:
My Goals
Through Youth Challenge International, I hope to travel to Costa Rica in May 2008 for 10 weeks of aiding in local construction and development projects.
I choose to embark on this project for several reasons:
First and foremost, I wish to contribute positively to the lives of others. Although I could do this by staying in Canada, where such opportunities are plentiful, I have chosen this project because I feel it will provide me with an experience I would not be able to find here in Canada. I've had the chance to live a higher-income life in Alberta for two summers, now I want to try the other end of the spectrum and pay to work elsewhere pro bono.
I feel that interacting with a culture different from my own is integral to becoming a better world citizen, not to mention broadening my own perspective. I want to know how it feels to be a true humanitarian. When I say I care about the wellbeing of humanity, I want to be able to back up that statement with hands on experience.
Lastly, I'm eager to forge new bonds with our team members and those of the communities where we will be working. This will be an incredible experience from which I hope to bring back home as much as possible.
Ultimately, the goal is to acquire skills and contacts and a new drive to work for aid projects both in Canada and internationally.
A Work In Progress
There is much to when preparing for a project of this magnitude. So far, I have been taking Spanish lessons at the local community college, researching Costa Rica, taking CPR/First Aid, paying for all immunizations. I've been working evenings to help come up with the needed $3,800 plus money for plane tickets. This can sometimes be difficult, as I am also pursuing bachelor's in mechanical engineering.
The $3,800 goes toward training, accommodations, food, water, tools, building supplies, local transport, insurance and administration costs. It is because YCI's employees work hard that I can be linked up to projects in South America and team members from all over. It is well worth the cost to have these services available to the volunteers; otherwise we would not have the means to partake in such projects.

Bienvenue a ma page de levee de fonds!

Comme vous le savez possiblement, je vais au Costa Rica l'ete prochain afin de travailler benevolement avec l'organisation Youth Challenge International (YCI). Un tel voyage necessite toutefois une somme importante d'argent. J'aimerais avant tout partager avec vous mes objectifs, les details du projet ainsi que les raisons derrieres celui-ci.
Mes objectifs
Par le biais de Youth Challenge International, je prevois me rendre au Costa Rica au mois de mai 2008 pour 10 semaines afin d'aider a la construction et au developpement communautaire de certains endroits plus demunis.
Plusieurs raisons me poussent a participer a ce projet. D'abord et avant tout, je veux contribuer de facon positive a la vie d'autres personnes. Je pourrais faire ceci au Canada, ou il y a sans aucun doute des opportunites de ce genre; mais ce projet me permet d'acquerir une experience que je ne pourrais pas vivre au Canada. Pendant deux etes, j'ai eu l'occasion de vivre une vie a revenu superieur en Alberta; je veux maintenant voir l'autre cote de la medaille et payer pour travailler benevolement en dehors de mon pays.
Je sens qu'interagir avec une culture differente ajoutera, a mon bagage culturel, une vision du monde plus large. Je souhaite vivre une experience d'aide humanitaire et en connaitre les repercussions. Quand je dis etre sensible au bien-etre de l'humanite, je veux etre capable d'appuyer cette affirmation par mon vecu.
De plus, j'ai hate de tisser des liens avec les personnes de notre equipe et avec les personnes des communautes ou nous travaillerons. J'espere pouvoir repandre les bienfaits de cette experience enrichissante chez nous.
En fin de compte, l'objectif ultime du projet est de fonder un reseau de connaissances et d'acquerir des competences ainsi qu'une nouvelle energie qui me permettront de travailler a d'autres projets d'aide au Canada et ailleurs.
Une preparation rigoureuse
Il y a tellement de choses a faire pour preparer un projet de cette ampleur. J'apprends presentement l'espagnol au College communautaire du Nouveau-Brunswick de Moncton, je fais ma recherche sur le Costa Rica, je suis des cours de premiers soins, et je paye pour obtenir les vaccins necessaires. Je travaille en soiree afin d'amasser un montant de plus de 3 800 $ pour ce projet. Cette demarche est parfois ardue, car je suis aussi etudiant a temps complet en genie mecanique a l'Universite de Moncton.
Ce montant de 3 800 $ comprend la formation, l'hebergement, la nourriture, l'eau, les outils, le materiel de construction, le transport local, l'assurance et les couts administratifs. C'est grace a l'efficacite des employes de YCI que j'ai l'occasion de participer a ce projet en Amerique centrale et a faire partie d'une equipe internationale exceptionnelle. Ces depenses valent bien le coup, car sans ces services a leur disposition, les benevoles n'auraient pas les moyens de participer a de tels projets.
